Ignis H2 Energy Inc. established its Ignis Türkiye (IGNIS) branch and, as of Q4 2023, secured four geothermal exploration concessions in the Eastern Anatolia. One of these, the Kantarkaya license, is in the Karlıova Triple Junction, which contains significant fault zones with various geothermal manifestations. The primary structural control is Yedisu Segment of The North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), and it creates suitable permeable zones for geothermal fluid circulation. A substantial cap rock is anticipated at the intersection zone, where numerous signs of alteration and elements of a geothermal system are evident.
Preliminary field observations to the north and south of the fault involve a detailed analysis of geothermal anomalies and geological findings. During the fieldwork, fault planes, alteration zones, and hot water outlets were identifiedIn geothermal areas, faults control hydrothermal activity, leading to various alterations. Meanwhile, cooling cracks in volcanic materials and damage zones formed during eruptions provide significant permeability for fluid circulation within the rocks. Additionally, signs of old alterations have been detected within the geological units (Picture 2).
Sampling for detailed rock and geothermal fluid chemistry and isotope analyses were carried out in early 2024 and supported generation of a conceptual model by providing data on fluid characterization, circulation, reservoir temperature, and chemical properties. IGNIS intends to commence Magnetotelluric (MT) surveys by early 2025 in the license area to determine the depth, distribution, and thickness of geological units and structural features in the region. The findings of these studies will yield vital data regarding the geothermal potential of the license area, thereby contributing to the region’s energy production capacity.
