Ignis H2 Energy Inc. established its Ignis Türkiye (IGNIS) branch as of Q4 2023 and had four geothermal exploration concessions granted in Eastern Anatolia. One of these concessions called Ilıpınar Exploration license is in the Upper Euphrates section of the Eastern Anatolia Region, within the boundaries of Ilıpınar village in the Karlıova district of Bingöl province. The name “Ilıpınar” (means warm spring in English) reflects the characteristics of the region, indicating the presence of numerous geothermal manifestations in the area. The studies conducted in the license area mainly focus on surface geology and geochemistry research, aiming to reveal the geothermal potential of the region by examining its stratigraphic, kinematic and structural features.
Geological studies in the license area have primarily focused on stratigraphic and geological research around the Karlıova Basin and its surroundings. These studies have identified that the main geological unit of the region is the Accretionary Complex, with significant contributions from metamorphic rocks and Oligo-Miocene-aged sediments. Additionally, it was determined that the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) and the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) converge near Karlıova, forming a “Triple Junction Structure.”
As part of the geochemical studies, water and rock samples are analyzed. The geochemical analysis reflects a rich sodium chloride and bicarbonate indicating that geothermal fluids are influenced by water-rock interactions with volcanic rocks and limestones in the region.
IGNIS intends to commence Magnetotelluric (MT) surveys by early 2025 in the license area to determine the depth, distribution, and thickness of geological units and structural features in the region. The findings of these studies will yield vital data regarding the geothermal potential of the license area, thereby contributing to the region’s energy production capacity.
